Abraham Bichara, CEO of AES El Salvador, relies on electromobility for a sustainable future

February 10, 2025

According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), during the first quarter of 2024, global electric vehicle sales grew by approximately 25% compared to the same period in 2023, replicating the year-over-year growth recorded in 2022.

In this context, the Central American region has not lagged behind. Specifically in El Salvador, AES has been leading the transition to electric mobility since 2020, reaffirming its strong commitment to environmental sustainability and innovation.

The company has developed a strategy based on three key actions: advising those customers who wish to migrate their fleets to electric vehicles and supporting them to achieve their respective sustainable strategies; promoting the installation of electric chargers in public and private spaces; and gradually replacing the light urban fleet of its distribution companies with 100% electric vehicles.

Thanks to this, today we can confidently say that traveling across the entire country with zero emissions is a reality. On average, electric cars have a range of approximately 350 kilometers, enough to face routine journeys without any problems or travel through the country, thanks to the network of charging stations that our company, together with strategic partners, continues to expand,” stated Abraham Bichara, AES El Salvador’s CEO.

The company plans to continue implementing electromobility and leading the transition to this cleaner and more sustainable mode of transportation. This initiative consolidates its innovation strategy and aligns with the global efforts of the AES Corporation to reduce CO2 emissions for the benefit of the environment.

  • The importance of electromobility

CO2 emissions from vehicles could be on track for net zero emissions by 2050. In fact, the IEA estimates that, with the right policies, electric vehicles could reduce global CO2 emissions by up to 1.5 gigatons per year by 2030.

As climate change becomes a growing concern, electromobility offers an important alternative for the decarbonization of the transport sector, which is now responsible for almost one-sixth of global emissions. This could have a positive impact on air quality, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and decreasing dependence on fossil fuels, thus transforming cities into more sustainable and resilient spaces.
